Bicameral health care, tax & trade policy veteran bolsters lobbying team
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 7, 2018 – Matt Hoffmann will be joining BGR Government Affairs as a Vice President on May 14. Matt’s work at BGR will primarily focus on health care access, reimbursement and reform issues as part of the Health and Lifesciences Team. He will also play a key role in BGR’s tax and trade activities.
Matt brings nearly 14 years of experience working in both the House and Senate. Most recently, Matt served as Policy Director at the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the major federal entitlement programs, the tax code and trade. He joined the committee during its consideration of the recently enacted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and bipartisan budget deal. He played a central role in facilitating House and Senate policy communication, committee markups, and policy development.
Commenting on Matt’s work, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch remarked, “Matt’s experience in both chambers of Congress coupled with his quick wit and approachability make him unique among policy experts on Capitol Hill. Joining the committee at a critical juncture, he played a pivotal role in helping to successfully navigate the largest tax overhaul in more than 30 years. Additionally, he worked to push a number of bipartisan healthcare initiatives across the finish line with the enactment of the recent budget deal. Matt is a strong asset to have on your side in any debate, and I know he’ll succeed in this next endeavor.”
Previously, Matt served in the Office of the Speaker where he managed the development and advancement of the chamber’s health care agenda. Previous roles also included Staff Director for the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Health and Budget Analyst at the House Budget Committee.
When Matt moved from Speaker’s office to the Senate Finance Committee in September of 2017, Speaker Ryan offered his long-time staffer praise, saying among other things, ” From the Budget Committee to Ways and Means, and now in the Speaker’s office, Matt has played a major hand in the work I’m most proud of. He’s helped forge key bipartisan solutions. And he’s been a tireless advocate for patient-centered policies to improve our broken health care system.”
Commenting on joining BGR, Matt offered, “I am excited to begin the next phase of my career at BGR. The firm has a long history of successfully tackling complex public policy problems and its advocacy team is the most substantive, creative, and effective in Washington. That’s why they’ve been so successful for more than 25 years. I am honored they have invited me to join in these efforts and look forward to the work ahead.”
In 2012, Matt served as Governor Romney’s Health Care Policy Advisory team on the Romney/Ryan Presidential Campaign.
BGR Founding partner Haley Barbour said, “We pride ourselves on hiring smart and engaging lobbying team members. It speaks volumes about Matt that he has had the opportunity work with some of the Republican party’s most accomplished policy leaders including Speaker Ryan and Chairman Hatch. We are thrilled to have Matt as a colleague.”
A native of Massachusetts, Matt received his B.A. from Columbia University in 2004 and his M.B.A from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in 2013.
