WASHINGTON, D.C., November 12, 2015 – Lester Munson, Staff Director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will join BGR Government Affairs as vice president starting November 16th. Munson has extensive experience on Capitol Hill as a senior policy staff member in both the House and Senate as well as in the executive branch. He will be working in BGR’s well-regarded international practice.
“Lester is widely respected on Capitol Hill as a trusted, solution-oriented advisor who works effectively with stakeholders to achieve results,” said Lanny Griffith, CEO of BGR Group, the parent of BGR Government Affairs. “We are fortunate that he is bringing his experience and relationships for BGR colleagues and clients.”
“We are excited to be joined by such a talented, experienced expert in foreign policy and congressional affairs,” said Haley Barbour, Founding Partner of BGR. “Lester will immediately bolster our already strong advocacy team’s ability to accomplish client objectives.”
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, “Lester’s steady leadership, sound judgment and vast understanding of foreign policy issues made him one of the most well-respected advisors in Congress. As a member just completing my first term, Lester’s guidance was instrumental as we built a top-notch staff committed to strengthening the committee’s role and providing a place to debate and offer solutions to some of the most consequential foreign policy issues of our time. Although we will miss his counsel, we are happy for him as he embarks on this new endeavor and thankful for his 26 years of public service.”
Munson currently serves as Staff Director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Prior to joining Sen. Corker at Foreign Relations, Munson was Chief of Staff to Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) in both the House and Senate. He was also Deputy Assistant Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) from 2006-2007 where he led the congressional affairs team. Prior to that, Munson was Chief of Staff for Global Health at USAID from 2003-2005. In that role, he helped develop the framework for the Bush administration’s President’s Malaria Initiative and worked on the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Munson has also served as Communications Director and Professional Staff for both the House International Relations Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He began his career in the office of Representative Henry Hyde (R-Ill.).
Lester Munson commented, “It is a difficult decision to leave the job I love and the Senator I have the highest respect for. I am excited about the opportunity to join the talented BGR team and work on some of the most topical international affairs issues.”
Munson is a graduate of the University of Chicago and St. John’s College and resides in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife Julie and children Jonas and Annika.
